Dynamic Team

A dynamic team of teacher trainers for poor schools that need assistance. . .

I read about the RA 8525 Adopt-A-School Program (http://www.deped.gov.ph) and I also observed that according to that program one way to support poor schools is to provide them the following educational equipment, like PCs, slide projectors, color TVs (21 inches), VHS players/recorders, DVD players and photocopying machines. Unfortunately, it never mentioned about digital cameras.

My initial plan is to pilot test my project: Tutorial Modules and Trainors Manual on a step-by-step conversion of PowerPoint presentations to be played on a digital still camera and be viewed on a TV screen.
I have two objectives:
1. To identify schools that need assistance especially those with insufficient instructional materials/equipment and insufficient budget or funds.
2. To train teachers to improve teaching and enhance students’ learning and to assure that the teachers that are trained actually apply what they have learned.
I have two solutions:
1. To identify partner communities/institutions/corporations that are willing to sponsor a sustainable teacher training programs to schools mentioned above.
2. To design and offer modules/manuals/short-courses to suit teachers with different needs at all levels.
Although I know that with MaLT graduates, MaLT students, CLCIR people, and CLCIR trained faculty a dynamic team of teacher trainers can be created, as to whoever is willing to sponsor this project still remains to be seen. Are you the one?

Dear Mr. Jose Ferro, Jr.,

Personally I'm pleased with the short time it took for you to reply.

Our 3rd term classes in DLS-CSB resume on Wednesday, January 4. I usually stay in my office and attend my classes during school days. You are most welcome to visit in our school any time you are free.

I will also appreciate if we can meet and discuss the project with my colleague who is the head of faculty training on instruction. Other than discussing the possibility of pilot testing the project in public high schools, which I look forward to, we can also discuss the strategies we employ on our faculty computer training/seminar. Not only that, since our school offers computer or computer related degree courses, namely, 1) Computer Applications, 2) Information Management and 3)Multimedia Arts, I may also request the expertise of our teachers in these areas. So your question on how to train teachers with no experience in computers can be addressed by our competent teachers/trainors.

With regards to the specific digital camera that would best work, we can also discuss it in the meeting. In the mean time, I can only propose two tentative criteria:

* Supports Windows XP/ME/2000/98, Mac OS 8.6 or later
* Supports TV-OUT (NTSC/PAL)

Like I said, this project works excellently with 1) Sony Cyber Shot (DSC-P52), 2) Canon Ixus 500 (T9568), and Olympus C-2020 Zoom. I am convinced similar procedure also works with other digital cameras of different brands and models. The lowest price you can find available in the market today is Genius G-Shot P210 Digital Camera which costs Php 4,992.00 (http://www.villman.com).

Dear Mr. Antony Ingles,

First of all, Thank you for taking a moment of your valuable time to
write to GILAS. After reading up on your project and its possibilities
for education, I believe that it has a lot of potential. There are a
few questions that arise from this project, such as how to go about
training for teachers with no experience in computers, are there
specific cameras that would best suit your needs, and what are the
best cameras available in the Philippines that you can use for your
project that are also cost effective. May I ask for your contact
details so I can set a meeting with you and eventually discuss on how
we can help each other's project forward? One possibility that we can
discuss is test piloting your project with a number of public high
schools and see how the teachers and students respond to your project.

Subject: Sustainability Program Focusing On eEducation

Dear Sir/Madam:

I email you to humbly share with you my project which I dedicated to
our countrymen. I believe that this new alternative teaching tool is
beneficial to poor schools, teachers and students here that have no
enough technology and financial resources and no opportunity to afford
computers and multimedia projectors.

Last October 2004, I started doing digital still camera-based
presentations in my classes here at De La Salle-College of Saint
Benilde. Two months ago, September 2005, I started doing a project,
i.e., Tutorial Modules and Trainor's Manual on a step-by-step
conversion of PowerPoint presentations to be played on a digital still
camera and be viewed on a TV screen. In short, it is a course on
digital camera-based presentation.

I'm not a photographer. I'm a college instructor by profession for 14
years. Wanting to create an alternative visual aid in teaching, by
exploring, this project works excellently with these two digital
cameras 1) Sony Cyber Shot (DSC-P52), and 2) Canon Ixus 500 (T9568). I
believed similar procedure also works with other digital cameras of
different brands and models. While this project is being prepared, I'm
very happy that I inadvertently stumbled upon a web site
(http://dpfwiw.com/c-2000z/tips/) and realized that McCreary also
applied a similar method with his Olympus C-2020 Zoom 1999. He
discussed about uploading images for camera-based slide shows. He said
that, "an Oly digital camera hooked to a TV set can be used to present
slide shows."

I read about the RA 8525 Adopt-A-School Program
(http://www.deped.gov.ph) and I also observed that according to that
program one way to support poor schools is to provide them the
following educational equipment, like PCs, slide projectors, color TVs
(21 inches), VHS Player/recorders, DVD players and photocopying
machines. Unfortunately, it never mentioned about digital cameras.

I also read about PBSP's Communication & Learning Centers For
Teachers (http://www.pbsp.org.ph/call_for_support.htm 2), listing the
following: PCs with modem/s and printer/s, VCD Players, Television
Set, Photocopiers... But it never mentioned about digital cameras.

Today digital camera is no longer for personal/professional use of
taking pictures of your family, friends or the beauty of nature.
Teachers and students are using digital cameras to capture images for
educational purposes like in creating web pages, preparing documents,
gathering data and running presentations to increase students'
achievement and enhance their learning.

I have a dynamic team of teacher trainers willing to offer their
services for free. My initial plan is to pilot test my project on a
step-by-step conversion of PowerPoint presentations to be played on a
digital still camera and be viewed on a TV screen. You maybe are
thinking that you could simply save your PowerPoint file to a digital
still camera and it would just run. It does not work that way. But it
is not that difficult. Of course you still need a computer to create
your presentations. However, when you display your presentations, a
computer is no longer needed.

I hope my project also opens an opportunity reach out to generous
people to share their old and used but still functional digital
cameras to poor schools for they are amazing tools and excellent
gadgets for creating digital camera-based presentations.
